Monthly
Meeting
Thursday, June 3rd at
7PM - Upstairs classroom at Ocean Enterprises. This month, Dr.
Ed Parnell from Scripps Institute of Oceanography will visit us;
we'll have the usual raffle. Meet for dinner at 5:30 in Appleby's
across the street from Ocean Enterprises. All are welcome to join
us. either at Appleby's or at the meeting itself.
From
the President
My son James and I made our first
dive this year at La Jolla Shores. Conditions were generally good,
both topside and below. All my gear changes work well, so I'm
ready for some more diving. According to the reports on Divebums,
people are seeing lots of stuff in most locations. The leopard
sharks are back in the shallows too.
It's a great time of year to let the yard chores slide (again) and go diving.
Help Wanted: Newsletter editor - I've been editing this thing since 1996, and it's time for a change. It takes a few hours per month, and you really get to connect to the local diving community. Contact me if you're interested.
Club
Diving
We'll set some dates at the meeting.
Conditions are generally good, the really cold thermocline seems
to be a lot deeper now. Send
an email to the list if you want to
dive after work or on the weekend.

is scheduled for Friday and Saturday evening, October 1 &
2, 2004 at the state-of-the-art, large-format theater at the San
Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park. Last year's Film
Exhibition at the Oceans 2003 conference / Scripps Centennial,
was an overwhelming success and we hope this year's will be even
better. Each evening’s program will consist of 14 to 16 short
films, submitted by both accomplished professional and aspiring
amateur underwater filmmakers and videographers.
To enter a film, edit a presentation of five minutes or less of your best underwater footage, and submit it to the organizers, so that it is RECEIVED no later than July 1, 2004. Submissions are limited to three films/videos per filmmaker.
Films should have a soundtrack that complements the visual footage and may include narration, Filmmakers are also encouraged to introduce their film. No film can be longer than five minutes and at least 50% of the footage must be underwater. Please ensure that no part of your film infringes upon any rights, whether music, visual footage, personal, copyright, or any other legal right.
They are accepting only mini-DV NTSC tapes . Please submit a master copy, as these will be the show tapes. Please leave a 10-15 sec. blank leader at the beginning of your submissions. More than one film may be entered on a tape. If you have questions regarding the submission, feel free to contact Bob Gladden. To have tapes returned after the Film Exhibition, please include a proper sized, self-addressed, stamped envelope with proper postage. The San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition is not responsible for lost or damaged tapes.
Film selection will be made by the 1st of August by our judges, who are renowned in the fields of visual arts and media. No entrant will be allowed to participate in the actual judging of the films/videos submitted for consideration. If you have three films entered and chosen by our judges, only two shows will be used in the film exhibition.

Rocks Rips, and Reefs
Every year, the San Diego Council of Divers and the
San Diego City Lifeguards sponsor a series of in-the-water seminars
at local shore diving spots. The protocol is the same as previous
years; snorkelling gear only, wear no more than half your normal
diving weight. The cost is $5 per person and includes drinks and
snacks afterwards. Registration and waivers start at 0800 and
you should be suited up and ready by 8:15. This is a fun way to
get familiar with our local waters.
Call the dive and surf hotline the morning of the session at 619-221-8824 to make sure the session hasn't been cancelled due to rough weather.
