Monthly Meeting
Thursday March 7, 2002 6:50PM--
at Ocean Enterprises. Our guest speaker will be Kristine Orlich of Scubapro. Kristine will show us what's new in equipment and answer your questions about the Scubapro product line.

From the President
Thanks to all the club members who made it out to Sumner Auditorium for the last meeting. The OES had the largest group at the meeting and asked some good questions. It appears as if some of the questions about the validity of the science, along with the lack of economic investigation may have had an effect. In last weeks Sunday paper I read that the whole Marine Protection program is going back to square one. In other words, the CSDFG will be starting the process anew, and will not draw up zones before adequate environmental and economic research is complete…. I hope this is a win for all that are involved. There are plenty of tools at the disposal of the state for managing this resource; in general they have waited to long to use them. We, as divers, will have more opportunities to be heard…please take advantage of them. Happy Diving. -- Mark Clausen

Shore Diving
Diving conditions have been very good this last week. If you want to go dive, let me know and I'll send out an e-mail to the rest of the club. If you don't have email acess, please let me know and I will be happy to send out an invitaion for you.

I have heard that there are lots of jellyfish in Mission Bay. Apparently this is some sort of annual convention, but I've never heard of it before. Biggest congregations are down at the boat ramp near Sea World. Call diving conditions at 619-221-8824 before trying this as there may be contamination warnings. However, we've had so little rain lately that the bay seems moderately clean.

Boat Dives
No formal club trips planned for this month.

Flotsam
I have a new email address: stargazer1@cox.net. My old address goes away at the end of February, so please start using this one now. -- DLA

The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach is having a diver's day on March 17th. Show them your C-card and get in free. The California Classic Equipment Divers will also be there. Their display will feature antique diving equipment and will perform demonstration dives of the US Navy MK V hardhat diving rig. The Historical Diving Society, the Catalina Chamber, California Diving News and a host of other organizations will feature displays and booths underneath the Aquarium's 88-foot blue whale model in the Great Hall of the Pacific.

The Aquarium of the Pacific is located at 100 Aquarium Way, Long Beach, CA 90802

Kelp Restoration Project: Many thanks to Kevin for stopping by to talk with us at our last meeting. San Diego BayKeeper, received a grant from NOAA for kelp restoration along San Diego over the next three years. I am the marine biologist for the project, and need help with divers willing to implement restoring kelp habitats. This involves outplanting of juvenile kelp grown in a mariculture lab, and monitoring the sites while gathering data.
