From the President
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Our January trip is full and I know all of you that are going are ready. We should now begin planning the next club trip, either in the fall or winter later this year. We will discuss this at the upcoming meeting.
A special thanks goes out to Shaun for hosting this years Christmas party, the food was great (thanks to everyone) and I think a good time was had by all. These events are really great, thanks to all who made the time in their busy schedules.
We are proceeding with incorporation and will be needing a few volunteers to be on the board, interested parties please contact Mark. Mark Clausen
Shore Diving
Saturday Dec 2 News Years Day Dive - Best tides of the month. It will be great especially if Santa Ana's continue. Meet at La Jolla Cove at 10:00am.
We'll plan our next lobster dive at the meeting.
Boat Dives
We don't have any club dives scheduled at the moment. Let Mark know if you're interested in diving the USS Hogan.
The Lois Ann offers club members a discount on many open boat trips. Due to heavy demand, they may not be able to offer the discount on all their trips. For more information, call 800/201-4381 or check the Lois Ann schedule on the next page or at http://www.loisann.com.
Flotsam
I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season.
We're progressing well with our incorporation project. We now have draft articles of incorporation and bylaws. A small group of people are reviewing these before we file them with the Secretary of State's office. We should have these filed before we leave for the Bahamas.
When we're done, we'll have a new, formally incorporated organization which should be able to do more for divers and the diving community.
We will hold elections for the board of directors within a few months of incorporating. In the meantime, we will need people to be officers and board members. If you can help us and attend one extra meeting every three months, please contact Mark.
Dive travel is on vacation this month. Our Bahamas trip is scheduled for the 19th-27th. I think the entire club is going on this one. I won't be answering e-mail, phones, or anything else for that matter. Pagers don't work under water.

Diving the Internet
The National Sea Grant Library has scanned and made available an online collection of diving publications. http://nsgl.gso.uri.edu/dive.html These publications are aimed at research diving programs, but there is a lot of good information for sport divers. The documents are scanned images. They can take a while to load if you don't have a high speed link.
Squid seem to spend a lot of time on the menu these days. Here is another fascinating story about filming Humbolt Squid in the Sea of Cortez: http://www.videosystems.com/cgi-bin/getframeletter.cgi?/html/2000/november/features/reddemon/reddemon.htm
The Navy Divers manual is now available online in Adobe Acrobat format. This book is the primary source for most of our sport diving techniques. You can download it from http://www.scubatoys.com/navy/
San Diego Council of Divers
The San Diego Council of Divers have elected a new set of volunteers who will continue all the council programs that help support the San Diego community of divers.
This is great news for all SCUBA divers. SDCD's buoy maintenance program benefits all divers, and the PCUPC is a fun event for everyone.
The new 1st District City Councilmember is Scott Peters. He is responsible for the northern part of San Diego county which includes La Jolla and Del Mar. The SDCD board members will be sitting down with Mr. Scott Peters in January 2001 to discuss coastal issues from a diver's perspective.
It would GREATLY help if each of you would take the time to sit down and write to John Moore and the SDCD about whatever issues you think need to be dealt with affecting our coast/ocean.
What are the issues? What are your positions on the issues?
John would love to have several hundred e-mails on this in the next couple weeks, so please respond! The more input they get, the better their ability to deal with the San Diego city government.
You may send e-mail to John Moore, john@divebums.com.
Renewal rates are $20 single; $30 for a family. Send your renewal to Mark Clausen; 1862 Willow Way; Vista, CA 92083.
