Next Meeting
There will be no August meeting at Ocean Enterprises. In its stead, we will meet at La Jolla Shores on August 25th for to dive, play at the beach, and BBQ.

Group dive at 10:15am followed by barbecue, sun and fun. The club will supply entrée and beverages. Please bring a side dish. You can also bring your frisbee, boogie board, or whatever makes your duck quack. Please RSVP to mark@oceanexplorers.org as to number in your party. Family members and SO's are welcome.

Important Announcement
The Marine Life Protection Act (MPLA) is a state law which mandates that the Dept. of Fish and Game (DFG) locate, map, and define no-take areas which serve as replenishment sites for the rest of the coast. This sounds like a great idea in principle, but could be a either a good thing, or a disaster for sport divers depending on how it gets implemented. DFG has historically given more weight to the needs of commercial fishermen, and much less to sport fishing and other recreational activities. In this case, sportfishing includes U/W hunting.

The unfortunate reality is that sportfishing has minimal impact except in a handful of areas, yet it gets the most regulation. At the same time, commercial fishing gets minimal regulation until there is an undeniable crisis. One need only look at the history of the Southern California abalone fishery to see how these priorities work at Fish and Game.

In our case, there are plans to increase the no-take zones around the current preserves in La Jolla.

There will be a workshop to discuss the boundaries of the San Diego reserves. It's absolutely vital that divers learn about the proposals, and make their voices heard at the meeting. If we don't show up, the commercial fishermen will be the only ones the commission hears. We all know where that road takes us.

Read the current proposals. Write up your comments. Then, either go to the meeting, submit them in writing, or both.

From the President
The July club charter had only 2 members show up so the trip was canceled. We have been given the opportunity by the generous crew of the Lois Ann to reschedule the dive. They suggested a Friday afternoon 2 tank at our convenience. We appreciate the more than fair treatment we have received from ownership of the Lois Ann. Hopefully we can muster enough interest to reschedule. Please e-mail me if you can or are interested in a mid-week dive.

The San Diego Council of Divers is soliciting for a board member to fill one seat, anyone interested please call me.

I hope all of you can make it to the club Que at La Jolla Shores at the end of the month. – Mark Clausen

Shore Diving
Saturday August 25, 10:15am at the club picnic.

Boat Dives
We'll arrange a jump-on dive at the BBQ.

Our August 11 charter on the Lois Ann has been canceled.

Flotsam
OE is closing at 7 PM. Please get to the meeting a little earlier if you can. If you can't, we've usually been able to keep the door on the west side of the building open. You can also call either Mark or I and we'll send someone down to open the door for you.

Speaking of flotsam, there is an epic red tide right now. The dinoflagelates that cause the red tide, also give off light when caught in turbulent water. This would be a perfect time for a night-time stroll down Black's Beach.

Welcome to the newsletter layout. This is not too much different from the old one, except that I've been able to add the table of contents and navigation features. I hope you all like it. Please feel free to send me any comments, good and bad.

I've been wondering whether we should change the e-mail newsletter to a webserver based distribution. Instead of sending the entire newsletter, I would send you all a web address. You can then retrieve it from there. I would get a lot more freedom to include things like photographs and graphics. However, you would need web access to read the newsletter. Please let me know ASAP if you cannot access the web from your e-mail account.

Rocks, Rips, and Reefs
Rocks, Rips, and Reefs (affectionately known as the 3R's) is jointly sponsored by the SDCD, San Diego Lifeguards, and local dive clubs. 3R's are an in the water orientation to the local shore diving in San Diego. It's usually given by a member of the lifeguard staff.

Taking advantage of this program is easy. Show up at the rendezvous point with your wetsuit, snorkeling gear, and a weight belt containing no more than half of your usual diving weight.

The lifeguards request a $5 donation to cover expenses. Refreshments are provided at your exit point. Call the dive and surf report at 619/221-8824 on the morning of the 3Rs to discover the final location, or whether the session has been canceled due to poor conditions.

Here are the remaining events:

San Diego Council of Divers
The next SDCD meeting is 7 PM on August 9th at Rock Bottom Brewery and Restaurant in La Jolla at 8980 Via La Jolla Drive. The last few meetings have been very good, and you can't beat the venue.

Call for Volunteers
Project Pacific is monitoring the beaches during the next 3 grunion runs for spawning activity. They will then compile the observations and direct Park and Recreation where they should or should not rake the beaches, according to where spawning activity was observed. It seems that they have been raking up the grunion eggs.

Project Pacific needs volunteers to help monitor. The next runs will occur July 22-25, August 5-8 and August 20-23. See www.projectpacific.org if you are interested (click on "Grunion" under "Issues & Concerns").

La Jolla Preserve Research
The sidescan sonar map of the preserve is finished. However, there are some areas which need actual visits to verify that the mappers have correctly interpreted the sonar data. This also goes by the delightful term of groundtruthing.

Dr. Parnell is looking for some volunteer divers to go visit these sites and record the bottom conditions. If you would like to help out in this effort, there will be a meeting Tuesday, July 24th at 7 PM in Sumner Auditorium at Scripps. You may also contact Dr. Parnell via e-mail at edparnell@ucsd.edu

Dive Travel
I'm looking at Channel Islands or Catalina sometime late summer, or early fall. 3 day trips on the Truth Aquatics boats are great trips; reasonably priced, and very relaxing. If you're interested, please let me know.

Australia
Paul Lee and a few other members are planning an Australia trip for the middle two weeks of January, 2002. The trip would include a 4 or 5 day liveaboard out of Cairns, a two day white water rafting trip, and sightseeing
in Sydney for a few days. The live aboard runs about $500, the rafting about $200, and Sydney depends largely upon accommodations. Airfare prices now are around $1350 from Los Angeles, (But Paul says he can find some for much less). Anyone interested should contact Paul Lee at PaulLeesd@earthlink.net for more information.

Mexico
Club Med, Sonora Bay, Mexico - We have an informal group going to Club Med the week of October 13 - 30. Contact Eileen Monzon at emonzon1@home.com for more information.

Laura Mankoff is organizing a trip to Chinchorro Banks in Mexico. Dates: Wednesday, December 26, 2001 through Wednesday, January 2, 2002 This is an all inclusive (except alcohol) resort. Very laid back. Beautiful accommodations with air conditioning, TV's (no phones), and pool. They have two great boats and Laura will make sure we get the bigger boat. Boats are camera friendly.

Price is $1245 + $100 transportation fee. Its a four hour drive from Cancun to Maya Ha. The resort van picks us up in Cancun. American from Miami is best route.

Price includes all meals, 5 days of diving or land tour (kayaking trip, day trip to one of the ruins). There is one day nothing is planed but a kayak trip would cost $75 per person and includes lunch and a tour of one of the local forts. Air Fare not included. Let Laura know if you want us to get your airfare. The more seats the better fare they can get. (bulk) vs. economy.

Water temp was 78-82 degrees and air was in upper 70's. Very pleasant. Did wear Chammyz on the boat, but was never uncomfortable. No gloves are allowed.

Ten spaces are available. Deposit of $200 is required to hold your space. Deposits are nonrefundable.
